The year, 2040: the sins of the past are visited upon humanity. Global warming, pandemic disease, birth defects from a genetically-engineered food supply, rampant terrorism, out-of-control governments and social disorder are brought to bear on a world ill-prepared to survive, despite decades of warnings. When one mother of three loses her husband suddenly, she gathers her formidable resources and a circle of single mothers to begin anew, fleeing Portland for an abandoned research station in Central Oregon. Together they form a new kind of community, rich in emotional support and self-sufficiency, but the challenges they face from the outside world threaten to derail what could become a model of sustainability for the future.
